FCPX-Resolve Workflow:

What Does/Doesn’t work going in out of Resolve-

1. Red RAW settings – Preserved
2. Spatial Conform settings – Don’t seem to work.
3. Transform Settings – Work perfectly.
4. Primary Color Corrections – Will pass through, but won’t necessarily be accurate.
5. Secondary Color Corrections – Will not show up in Resolve
6. Multicam Clips – Work perfectly, unless it is a Large multicam clip with lots of clips/angles constructed with clips without timecode spaced out along the same angle.
7. Motion Generators, effects, plugins – Modifications you make to these will not be reflected coming back to resolve. Will go back to their default values when you round trip.
8. Speed Adjustments – Constant speed changes will typically work, but expect everything else to not work.
9. Compound Clips – Smaller ones may kind of work, but it is highly recommended you break apart before bringing into FCPX.

FCPX: New Compound Clip Workflow

1. Make a smart collection for your compound clips – rt click on your event, select “make new smart collection, set the filter to “clip type”, and then select “compound clips”. Any new compound clips you make in your event will now go to this smart collection.
2. Compound Clip performance has improved dramatically in the latest release. The reason for this is because FCPX no longer makes a unique compound clip each time to blade/modify one. You should no longer be afraid of performance problems when using compound clips.
3. However, because of the new behavior, you need to interact with your compound clips a bit differently. They now behave the way nests used to in FCP7, so any changes you make inside a compound clip will now ripple across all other instances where you’ve used that particular compound clip, unless you make it independent first. You can do this by going into the “clip” dropdown with a compound clip selected and select “reference new parent clip”. It will create a copy of your compound clip in your event, and any changes you now make to the compound clip will not ripple through to other instances.
4. You can also do this process globally when you duplicate a project by selecting “duplicate project + used clips”, and then selecting the compound clip and multicam option. This will cause all instances of compound clips and multicam clips in your new project to be independent, which means that when you alter them in your new project, it won’t affect other versions in your other events and projects.
